SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING PLAYOFF FORMAT
With the exception of the Wrestling and the Track & Field Programs, all sports will participate in a playoff format whereby the top 4 teams in each division will meet in semi-finals on the first date listed, and the two teams advancing from semi-finals will meet in a championship match/game on the second date listed.

Congratulations Lawson Athletes!

Lawson held it's annual Sports Gala event on May 19th for athletes and
their families to come and celebrate after school sports. Each of the teams
gathered in turn to be introduced on stage, and the coaches announced their
player awards.

The school year is split into five sports seasons, with teams composed of various
combinations of girls/boys/co-ed and 6th+7th grade/8th grade/C. (A "C" team is
one composed of 6th, 7th, 8th graders who are all under 5'3".)

The MVP awards given for each sport included:

Jay Lawson Award for Outstanding Dedication to Athletics: Janaye S

The festive night concluded with a raffle including prizes such as tickets for Sharks and Giants games.

Lawson is proud of its growing sports program and looks forward to continuing and adding to its intra-mural sports program to augment its intermural league sports. This year, the PTA and Sports Boosters gifted a set of ten ping-pong tables that are used in the physical educational program and are sure to spark an additional competitive intramural sport to the mix for next year!

Athletic Directors Jeremy Gibbons and Jeren Jensen also helped to increase the number of student spectators at home games this year by awarding "Maroon Mob" T-shirts to students who showed up to cheer for Lawson athletes (maroon being one of the school colors).

In Wes Morse's biography of Sam Lawson, he says, "Perhaps the best way to honor Sam at the school that bears his name is to have the finest physical educational program possible. That would have meant a lot to him." Lawson Middle School is well on its way in striving towards that goal.

Congratulations to all the Lawson Athletes for a great year of school sports!

Parent Meeting - February 14

Coach Tibor P. is the Head coach. He may have an assistant intermittently helping him. Coach Tibor is also the keeper coach and general organizer.

Fee for the soccer program is $70, payable by check to "LGS Recreation"

Uniforms distributed before first game.
- two paris of socks are supplied by Lawson Sports boosters, player keep them
- player supplies cleated shoes, shinguards
- all clothing should be washed and ready for game day
- players that don't come with complete uniform will not play

On cold/wet afternoons, recommend warm undershirt such as UnderArmor
- must match uniform sleeve color of Maroon/Navy/Black

Hope to have blankets for the players on the bench to bundle up in.

- 4 home and 5 away games
- Maps to the various fields are here.
- Our season is relatively short, 6 weeks, only 14 practices and 9 games.
- We have two games each week and one last single game week.
- IF your child can not make a game, Please email as soon as you can!
- Parents are responsible for picking up their players from Game fields. Games end between 4:55-5:05. Please be on time to pick up.

Regular practice is Mon 3:15-4:45pm, Th-Th 3:15-5pm. Expect to pick your player latest by 5pm on Monday, and on all other days by 5:10pm.
- I am responsible for all players until they are picked up. Since it is way after school hours, I do not want them to walk home alone. Please make driving, carpool or buddy arrangements.

Email me regarding conflicts and absences for practice and games

Playing Format
- Starters are the 11 on the field and subs. This number is currently 16
- Reserves are extra players that I felt has good soccer potential and with "one good season" could be at least a sub. Reserves will get at least 5-7 minutes of playing time per game.
- Total squad size is 20 players
- As players improve or go into a slump they will move from one category to another.

Parent Involvement

Judy Chan has stepped up to be team parent. Yeh.

Need Carpool drivers. For 20 kids, we need at least 5-6 cars unless someone has very large van.

Parents must monitor and encourage good nutrition. Strongly limit sweets and ensure your player has a good breakfast, plenty for lunch and a pre-game healthy snack.

Dinners should be high in protein and carbohydrates to maintain those balls of energy.

Players must come to practice/games with a bottle of water. I will be providing sports drink in a cooler. The brand is CytoMax.

Snack Policy

I will be bringing CytoMax http://www.cytosport.com/products/cytomax/cytomax-natural-powders for half time drink. Only CytoMax, water, or some personally brought drink is all I want the girls to have at half time.

After game snack is a "kid" tradition that I'd like to temper for our games. If someone wants to supply fresh fruit ONLY, I have no issues but PLEASE do not bring any cookies, cake, chips or any other empty calorie type snack. Best if our girls come home with a healthy appetite and receive an early dinner.

Rain Out Policy

Game cancellation and Rain Out policy for Middle School soccer is as follows:

1) Each school's Athletic Director (AD) decides BY 12:30 whether to postpone that day's game based on current and forward looking weather conditions and the current state of their playing field.

2) If our game is canceled, the AD contacts me by 12:45.

3) I will email this parent list by 1pm ONLY IF THE GAME IS CANCELED. No email will go out if the game is on.

4) If a game is canceled (which it never has been in 4 years of Lawson soccer), I'll try and improvise a practice in the Exercise room. IF for some reason I can't find a place to "amuse" our girls, I'll add to the "Game Canceled" email a notice that practice is also canceled.

This is our final roster. We have squad of 20, four of which will be reserves. Thank you to all that tried out and contratulations to all that made it through four tough days! See you all on Monday, 3:15 SHARP.

All players will need to come to all practices and games with their own shinguards and cleated shoes. Uniforms, included socks will be handed out on a TBD date Feb 21-25.

Basketball Intramurals

Feb-15-2011=============================================

1) There will be a parent meeting starting at 5:00 PM on Thursday.

2) You should have received a packet from the Lawson Sports Booster which MUST be returned by close of practice (5:00 PM) on Thursday February 17, 2011.

3) Transportation to games is by parent carpool. The team needs a parent to coordinate the carpool.   I, the coach, do not give players rides to or from the games. The carpool takes the players to the game, but the PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PICKING UP THEIR CHILDREN AFTER THE GAME OR ARRANGING A RIDE HOME. We have 18 girls and one assistant coach to get to away games.

4) We are coming up on Spring break and I would like to have "get togethers" to practice Soccer during the break. I use the term get togethers because there is no requirement to attend these sessions, because school is out. However since our first game is March 1, 2011, I would like to have a few get togethers. The link points to a survey that I can use to see your daughter's availability. Note, we will try, if possible, to schedule the practices with the 6/7 team so that we will have a larger number of girls with which to work.

6) Practice Attendance: I'd like your girls to be at every practice, every game and any get togethers that work for you. Practices start after school Monday through Thursday and are over between 4:45 PM and 5:00 PM. Please be ready to collect your daughters by 5:00 PM. I attempt to stay until the last girl is picked up, so be prompt, but occasionally I must leave promptly. If I have to go, I will attempt to conscript other parents to watch over remaining girls, so please try and be flexible, if someone needs watching over. Note the 6/7 coach, Tibor Polgar, may be doing special sessions for all Lawson goal keepers on Fridays. Please send me e-mail if your daughter will not be attending practice.

7) Games: Games will start between 3:45 and 4:00 PM and consist of 2 thirty minute halves and a 5 minute half time. Soccer is played with 11 players on the field. We have a spectrum of talent that runs from club players to rank beginners. The middle school league is a competitive league and the stronger players will get the most playing time. The games are played to win -- so if its a tight game, some team members may not play.   This means that if your girl is not one of the stronger players, she may not get a lot of playing time.    Please notify me and the carpool drivers -- (away games), if your daughter will not be attending.

8) Parent Coordinator: The team needs a parent coordinator to coordinate the carpools, the end of season party etc.

9) Hydration: Please have your daughter bring a refillable bottle of water to practice, games, and get togethers.

10) Uniforms: Uniforms have been distributed. Players will need to return the uniforms at the end of the season. Players keep the socks. Players must supply cleated shoes and shinguards. Players must wear their uniform in order to play.

11) Weather: On cold wet days an additional layer underneath the uniform will keep the girls warmer. UnderArmor or a similar product will work well.

12) Game day: On game days I attempt to bring fruit like bananas and oranges for the girls to snack on before the game and half time. I would appreciate it if the parent coordinator could make this happen, as sometimes I am scrambling to get to games.

13) Parent participation at games: All cheering at games MUST be positive. No one but players and coaches are allowed in the technical area during games. No one can comment negatively on the abilities of either team's players or coaches. No questioning of a referee's calls are allowed by anyone other than the coach.

Again, I'd like to have you all attend a parent's meeting at 5:00 PM on February 17, 2011.   I am looking forward to the season and I hope to see you at all the games.

Parent/Guardian Information and Parent Survey

Drivers Needed: We need drivers to help transport students to and from the after school sports venues. This is a fun way to enjoy the enthusiasm of the kids and to watch them play some exciting contests.

If you are interested in volunteering to drive, please complete the transportation insurance form provided by the coach or at the end of this document. You only need to fill out one (1) form for the entire school year, unless your insurance information changes.

Code of Conduct: As parents/ guardians of young athletes your encouragement and support are a critical part of their success. The following statements represent some ideals that the coaches, athletic directors, and administrators expect from parents/ guardians.

Encourage your son/daughter to always play by the ‘Rules of the Game.’
Encourage young people to work towards skill improvement and good sportsmanship.
Do not place emphasis on winning at all costs.
Set a good example by applauding good play on both sides.
As a spectator do not use profane language or harass referees, coaches or players.
Do not publicly question the referees’ judgment and never his/her honesty.
Recognize the value and importance of the coaches. They give their time and resources to provide athletics for young players.
